PSOJ makes proposal that could provide jobs for Jamaicans in Trinidad

A proposal has been put forward which could see Jamaicans getting more work in Trinidad. It could also ease the immigration challenges for those already working in the country.

This was presented formally to Trinidad's Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley on Tuesday by William Mahfood, President of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica (PSOJ).

Dr. Rowley is currently on an official visit to Jamaica, which is aimed at fixing the immigration and trade issues between the countries.

Mr. Mahfood argued that there are several job opportunities in Trinidad for Jamaicans, but many do not qualify because of the requirements under the CARICOM skilled worker categories.

He advocated for a simplification of the process, suggesting a work permit programme that would allow companies from Trinidad, that have job vacancies which have not been filled by locals, to advertise these jobs to Jamaicans.

He said this process could be facilitated through Jamaica's Ministry of Labour, enabling Jamaicans to fill positions in Trinidad on a contractual basis.

"I think that would speak volumes to our opening of the market and increasing the partnership of the region," Mr. Mahfood said.
