PSOJ says BPO sector retarding economic growth

Howard Mitchell and BPIAJ President Gloria Henry

The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) has criticised the current state of the Business Process Outsouring (BPO) sector in Jamaica.

PSOJ President Howard Mitchell said while he welcomes the sector, it is not currently economically beneficial to Jamaica.

"At the level they are at now, they are a repressive economic source, and unless we exalt and improve the quality of the work that our people are doing for them, along with the quality of the pay, we are doing a disservice to our nation," he declared while speaking at a Rotary Club of New Kingston meeting on Friday morning.

The BPO industry has been identified as one of the drivers of the country's growth agenda.

BPIAJ responds

When RJR News sought a reaction from the Business Process Industry Association of Jamaica (BPIAJ), President Gloria Henry said she would not respond directly to the assertion by Mr. Mitchell.

However, she said the association would soon be releasing data with wage comparisons for the BPO industry versus other sectors.

"The BPO sector has bettered its original five year plan...by 30 per cent in employment numbers," she insisted, adding, "where would these people be employed if it wasn't for the BPO sector?"

With regards to the quality of work being produced, Mrs Henry argued that "many of our players are already producing the highest level of work in Jamaica."

However, she admitted that it is an ongoing process to replace the entry level jobs with higher paid work.
