Senator suggests fit and proper tests for persons appointed to state boards

Don Wehby

A suggestion has been made for persons to undergo rigorous fit and proper tests before being appointed to the board of State entities.

It came from Government Senator Don Wehby during his contribution to the State of Nation Debate on Friday.

Mr. Wehby argued that there should be rules that "mandate that every director that is appointed to the board of a public body must pass a rigorous fit and proper test as a condition of their appointment."

"I really believe that if you're going to be providing oversight and have a fiduciary duty on taxpayers' money, you must pass a fit and proper test," he declared.

Mr. Wehby was speaking against the background of the scandal surrounding the state-run oil refinery Petrojam.
