Some gov't funds to be reallocated to fight crime

Keith Duncan

Keith Duncan, Co-Chairman of the Economic Programme Oversight Committee (EPOC), has said the supplementary estimates to be tabled in Parliament soon, will include sums reallocated to fight crime.

Mr. Duncan, who was addressing a press briefing of the EPOC on Friday, said with the latest government data showing a fiscal surplus of almost $18 billion, fiscal space has been created to reallocate funds to critical areas.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has already indicated that the reallocation of spending priorities will be outlined in a revised budget.

"We expect...that there will be increased expenditure in the areas of infrastructure and we expect that there will be increased expenditure in the area of national security, which we all know is important to crime fighting strategies and dealing with the crime that is such a problem for Jamaica," Mr. Duncan noted.

Since the start of the year, the country has seen more than 1,300 murders, representing a 25 per cent increase over last year.
