Some Jamaicans from Windrush generation already assisted by High Commissioner in UK

George Ramocan, Jamaica's High Commissioner to London

George Ramocan, Jamaica's High Commissioner to London, says his office has intervened in cases involving Jamaicans who are part of  the Windrush generation, fearing the possibility of being deported or losing rights because of changes to UK immigration rules.

Mr. Ramocan made the disclosure on RJR's talkshow programme, Hotline, on Thursday morning.

He said the Home Office has had more than 100 people who have called in to the hotline to register themselves as persons in the Windrush generation seeking to formalise their status.

Within the Jamaican-UK community, about five persons have come forward. Three of these cases, he said, were addressed before the UK government made the announcement that no person who came to Britain during the Windrush period will be asked to leave.

The British Home Secretary has said it is suspected that some members of the Windrush generation were deported in error.

Mr. Ramocan said his office has not received any information of  Jamaicans being deported.

However, he has urged Jamaicans who might have found themselves in that situation to send an email with their concerns to jacuk.com.

A website is also being published for persons who need to access further information.

He said the Jamaican High Commission is to meet on Friday with the British Home Office to provide an update on measures to address issues affecting the Windrush generation.
