St. Thomas Parish Council plans to take the NWC to court

Errol Greene
The St. Thomas Parish Council is going ahead with its plan to take legal action against the National Water Commission (NWC) for what it says is its failure to adequately meet its mandate in the parish.

Errol Greene, Secretary-Manager of  the Council,  told RJR News that the Council will be meeting with its legal team next week. The ten member Council, in July voted 5-4 in favor of  taking the NWC to court. One Councillor abstained.

Mr Greene asserted that it had become necessary to proceed with legal action. He cited the lack of performance by the NWC and that councillors complaint about water leaving St. Thomas to other places. The Secretary Manager explained that the meeting with the lawyers is for the Council to give them instructions on how to proceed.

In the meantime, the NWC says a significant number of  its supply systems in rural areas continue to be negatively affected by the dry spell. According to NWC Corporate Public Relations Manager, Charles Buchanan, systems in the eastern section of  the island are among those severely affeccted.
