St. Thomas teachers furious about government's wage offer

Georgia Waugh Richards

Members of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) have begun to reject the six per cent wage offer presented by the government.

Teachers in St. Thomas were in a militant mood on Friday and called for a lock down of the system after they were informed of the offer by JTA President Georgia Waugh Richards.

"The teachers are restive, the teachers are disappointed and the teachers are angry," said a fuming Waugh Richards, who spoke at the half yearly meeting of the St. Thomas Chapter of the JTA, held at the Morant Villas.

She said based on feedback she has received, she expects the reaction will be the same from other sections of the country.

Similar meetings were held on Friday in St. Mary and Trelawny where those teachers are also reportedly upset about the offer.

The JTA will next week present the offer to other parishes and at its General Council on November 25.

The Council is then expected to give directions on the next move.

Mrs. Waugh Richards said she is hoping the government will call the JTA to another negotiation meeting before it gets to that point.
