Tourism spokesman upset with dissolution of craft council

Dr. Wykeham McNeill

Dr. Wykeham McNeill, Opposition Spokesman on Tourism, has expressed strong discontent with the disbandment of the Craft Council of Jamaica.

Dr. McNeill, who raised the issue during Tuesday's sitting of the House of Representatives, claimed that the government has erased many gains made in that sector, due to the termination of the Craft Council, which was used to assist craft vendors and others who operated small businesses that cater to tourists.

He explained that the council occupied a critical role in the lives of thousands of Jamaicans, because of the many support services it provided and the opportunity for artisans and traders to have a say in the operations of the industry.

The opposition spokesman called for the government to place more focus on these categories of workers by building more craft markets and reconvening the Craft Council of Jamaica.
