Union calls for meeting on future of postal service

The University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU)  is demanding a meeting with Postmaster General, Michael Gentles, to discuss the future of  the island's postal service.

UAWU Senior Negotiating Officer, Ashton Johnson, says postal workers are upset about the manner in which they became aware of  the impending closure of  hundreds of  post offices and postal agencies.

This was revealed by Gentles during Tuesday's sitting of  the Public Accounts Committee.

Johnson says the postal workers are restive and need clarity.

“Even last week the Post Master met with the staff and this was not disclosed….what the union is saying, we should have dialogue, we should not learn this by the media.”

He also expressed concern that  the issue has come about in middle of  public sector wage negotiations.

“We prepared a letter to send to the Post Master General, we feel that good sense will prevail. It is hard at this time, at the end of what we call no increase in salaries…..this is not going down nice,” he said.
