Zika virus spreads from Brazil to Dominican Republic

As the Jamaican authorities put preventive measures in place for the zika virus, the Dominican Republic is reporting that it has recorded its first case of  the mosquito-borne illness.

A 12-year-old girl from Puerto Plata has become the first person to contract the virus in that country. According to a newspaper report, the patient is hospitalised in a private clinic in the northern city. No further information on her condition has been revealed.

A month ago the Brazilian media reported on a number of  zika virus infections in Bahia state and other places. The virus is transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. The main clinical symptoms in patients are fever, conjunctivitis, muscle pain and a rash.

Jamaica's Ministry of  Health has been urging persons to eliminate mosquito breeding sites to prevent the zika virus from reaching Jamaica.
