"Axeman" back on home soil

The WBA World Super Featherweight Champion, Jamaica's Nicholas "Axeman" Walters, returned home on Wednesday via the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay to much fanfare.

Hundreds turned out to get a glimpse of the World Boxing Association's Super Featherweight Champion.

The man who's been outside of Jamaica for 11 months captured the super feather belt with a crushing sixth round knockout of Nonito Donaire last month.

But Walters revealed that many doubted he could beat Donaire.

“Friends called me and say to me that, you know what, ‘You cannot manage this fight, why you take such a hard fight? We are not betting on you, we are going to go against you in this fight because this fight is a fight that you cannot win.

But with dedication and hard training with my father in my camp and my other coach, the outcome was six rounds and knocking him out after six rounds,” Axeman noted.

Now at the top of the pile, Waltes is the target man and Jhonnie Gonzales could be next on his radar.

“Everybody is calling now for the Axeman, Lomachenko is calling for the Axeman and also Jhonnie Gonzales. Personally, I have always wanted to fight Jhonnie Gonzales because he has been a great champion, and I think he is worthy of fighting an opponent  who is going to bring a lot of fame and it is going to be a tough fight,” Walters commented.

But the Axeman says even though he wants the fight, it's down to the promoters to make it work.

The "Axeman" Walters meet and greet didn't end at the airport, as he made stops at the parish council, the Barrett Town Primary School and his alma mater Anchovy High signing autographs and taking pictures with his fans.
