Hummingbirds beat Spurs to take lead in BEL finals

Reigning champions the Kingston Hummingbirds will take a 1-0 lead into game two of the best of three Berger Elite League Netball finals after winning game one 58-49 over arch rivals Manchester Spurs at the National Indoor Sports Centre on Monday night. The Hummingbirds held quarterly leads of 14-10; 28-25 and 41-38.

They were led to victory by the competition's leading goal-shooter Sabrina Spence who netted 38 goals from 40 attempts while MVP Shanice Beckford weighed in with 20 from 23. Goal-shooter Gezelle Allison scored 23 goals from 27 attempts for the Manchester Spurs while goal-attack Anna-Kay Griffiths had 22 from 33.

Game two in the best of three finals will be played on Wenesday also at the National Indoor Sports Centre starting at 7:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Clarendon Gaters claimed third place after beating St Ann Orchids 49 - 38 in that playoff.
