Jamaica out of U20 CONCACAF tournament

Jamaica's U-20 footballers are out of the CONCACAF U-20 World Cup Qualifiers after going down 2-1 to Honduras in their second match of the tournament.

Alexander Lopez converted a dramatic 30-meter free kick in the 77th minute to complete Honduras' rally for a 2-1 victory over Jamaica on Thursday, sending them to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship.

Ever Alvarado also scored for "Los Catrachos", whose victory also assured host Guatemala of a place in the knockout round. Jamaica, which lost to Guatemala 2-0 on Tuesday, were eliminated, the third of five Caribbean teams to be sent home.

Honduras will face "Los Chapines" on Saturday to determine the Group A winner and seeding for the quarterfinals.

The United States, Panama, Costa Rica, Canada and Mexico already had qualified for the quarterfinals, the winners of which will advance to the U-20 World Cup.

Neco Brett scored with a dramatic 35-meter blast in the 25th, giving Jamaica hopes of advancing.

But Honduras began to control the possession and overcame a disallowed goal and a near miss in the 67th to prevail.

Neither side generated much early, but Honduras appeared to take the lead in the 17th minute when Alvarado scored only to have the goal disallowed due to a disputed offside call.

Jamaica then had the better of chances, forcing Honduran keeper Marlon Licona to tip Ricardo Morris' free kick over the bar in the 21st and finally taking the lead four minutes later.

Brett received an innocent looking ball outside the Honduran defensive third, turned, took two touches to get it on his right foot and unleashed an arcing right-footed shot that caught Lincona several steps off his line.

Honduras began to assert themselves, with Antony Lozano twice missing from inside the penalty area, but needed 16 minutes into the second half before Ever Alvarado equalized.

Nestor Martinez curled a corner kick to the opposite side of the area to Lopez, who headed it back across to the near post, where Alvarado nodded it in from seven meters.

The Catrachos thought they had a winner in the 67th when Jamaican keeper Kemar Foster dropped Lopez's cross inside the six-yard box, but Morris could not get a foot to it before Richardo Israel was able to clear it from danger.

Their frustration finally was salved 10 minutes later when Lopez drove a right-footed effort from the right past Foster and into the left-side netting.
