Jamaica's Kemoy Campbell falls and fails to advance in 5000m at World Championships

Jamaica's Kemoy Campbell struggled in the pace of topclass long distance runners.

But he also was knocked about and fell during the closing stages of heat-1 of the men's 5000 metres on day-5 of the 15th IAAF World Track & Field Championships at the Bird's Nest in Beijing, China.

Campbell would rise and complete the heat, finishing 15th of 19 runners in a heat which would spring 5 automatic qualifiers and the next 5 fastest non automatic qualifiers between the two heats. Campbell's time was 14 mins 00.55 secs, well below his personal best of 13 mins 20.39 secs set in Palo Alto, California on May 2 of this season.

The winning time was 13 mins 45.00 secs clocked by heat winner Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia.

The Jamaican team management quickly filed an appeal under rule 163.2(a), but the jury examined the evidence and dismissed the appeal, as the Jamaican team management claimed Campbell was jostled and impeded.

Ten thousand metres champion Mo Farah of Britain qualified from heat-2 along with nine others from this heat to complete the 15 man field for the final.

In the women's 800 metre heats, Simoya Campbell finished 28th overall of the 44 runners, after ending 5th in heat-4 in 2 mins 01.43 secs, not good enough for qualification. Natoya Goule was not luckier either, she ended 4th in heat-5 in 2 mins 02.37 secs and also failed to make progress. Goule was clipped by American Michelle Montano, and after the both Jamaica and the USA lodged appeals citing interference, the jury of appeal dismissed the motions.

Jamaica's men's sprint hurdlers all advanced to the semi-finals though.

Omar McLeod in an eventful heat-1, where he recovered after a runner fell and distracted him, causing him to hit several hurdles hard but McLeod recovered to finish second in 13.43 secs behind Barbadian Shane Brathwaite 13.28.

Andrew Riley 13.43 was second in his heat behind Pascal Martinot-LaGarde 13.35 and Olympic bronze medallist Hansle Parchment 13.33 won his heat (number-4). Other notables qualifying are world champion David Oliver and olympic champion Aries Merritt.
