Meanwhile on the women's side the supremely confident teenager Eugenie Bouchard reinforced her status as one of the game's most exciting prospects by upsetting 14th seed Ana Ivanovic 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
World number four Li Na swept aside Italian Flavia Pennetta in a straight-sets demolition 6-2, 6-2 to move into the semi-finals.
