NESOL employee, co-accused denied bail in corruption case

Lawrence Pommells, Chief Engineer at the State-run National Energy Solutions Limited (NESOL), and his co-accused, 32 year old mechanic Ricardo Harris, were refused bail on Tuesday afternoon when they appeared before the St. Catherine Parish Court on money laundering charges.

They are scheduled to return to court on June 26.

During the hearing, prosecutors strongly opposed bail, claiming that the men, especially Mr. Pommells, are considered flight risks.

They argued that he is financially well off, and if granted bail, could interfere with witnesses in the matter.

Mr. Pommells is accused of offering $20 million to bribe investigators following his arrest.

His attorney, Christopher Townsend, dismissed the claims by the prosecutors, adding that his client will not interfere with witnesses employed to NESOL.

He said a Stop Order can be imposed on his client.

The presiding judge denied the application after the court was told that the case file was incomplete.

Mr. Pommells and Mr. Harris were charged last week following an investigation into the seizure of $35 million at Mr. Pommells' home.

Cops raided his New Harbour Village residence in St. Catherine on June 7 and reportedly seized the money along with four high-end vehicles.

Further investigations led to Mr. Harris being arrested.

The men have been charged with breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act, money laundering, being in possession of criminal property, and bribery.
