No major upsets at U.S. Open Tennis

No big casualties yet, but top players were forced to dig deep to advance from the opening day of the US Open Tennis Championships in New York.

Women's number two seed Simona Halep came back from a set down to defeat American Danielle Collins 6-7,  6-1, 6-2.

Venus Williams overcame Kimiko Date-Krumm 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Sixth seed Angelique Kerber was also pushed to three sets by Ksenia Pervak who was beset by unforced errors and fell 6-2 3-6 7-5.

It was no different in the men's draw. 2012 winner Andy Murray was pushed by Robin Haase but prevailed 6-3, 7-6, 1-6, 7-5.

Murray said he had cramps all over, but struggled to explain the source of it.

“I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t know whether to conserve energy or to try and finish in three sets but then I got broken at the beginning of the set," Murray noted.

“Right now I just tried to hang around and at the end I was trying to play without using my legs much and managed to get through”, last year's Wimbledon champion stated.

Fernando Verdasco needed five sets to overcome Blaz Rola.
